I've fallen way behind in that series, but I kinda like knowing that it's waiting for me too.

A Certain Courage sounds like a book I would have loved when I was a kid, so I'm sorry to see that the public library doesn't have a copy for me to explore. They do, however, have a copy of Show Me A Sign, which I've added to my Saved list there; mainly because of your comparison to Jean Little (whose books I loved loved LOVED and still reread occasionally).

My mom was super into Rosemary Sutcliffe too. She never held the same appeal for me as a kid, but I bet I would enjoy them more as an adult reader.Buried In Printhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00808249065026802365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013114232214923198.post-12271821064142568202021-01-12T09:36:53.692-05:002021-01-12T09:36:53.692-05:00I did read Before She Was Helen, and liked it but ...I did read Before She Was Helen, and liked it but found it somewhat sad. I am a big Cooney fan although her books can be uneven. The Party's Over is one of my favorites along with the first two Milk Carton books. Beverly Cleary is the best, isn't she? When I worked at Avon, there were many discussions about repackaging. I always thought it was foolish to assume we knew best without getting feedback from booksellers and librarians, and I didn't like some of the results.

Lex, tailgating at HY games sometimes involves alcohol, which results in very silly behavior by undergraduates (or others). I was the manager of the Harvard team and am still a big fan, although in recent years I have become worried about the physical toll it takes on our student-athletes. You would like Ruth Arthur - On the Wasteland is not her best but is still very good.

Re the Fiona Griffiths series by Harry Bingham - the first book started slowly but she is such an unusual heroine I was so glad I had persevered and my sisters became fans too. In one book, she goes undercover, which is terrifying.

Tracy, I agree that Penny is hard to review without giving anything away, and it is hard to capture the charm of the interrelationships and how they have evolved over time. It has a good mix of several things you might like-- 1950s history, a murder mystery, and a YA author. I am however up to date on the Three Pines books as I'm a big Gamache fan too. I thought I was bad having about twenty books reserved from the library! Everything is at a standstill with the libraries closed for the moment anyway.Katrinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18138715309807238198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013114232214923198.post-14459738456456979312021-01-11T18:18:41.041-05:002021-01-11T18:18:41.041-05:00That Harry Bingham series is appealing. Several of Louise Penny's books knocked me for six when I read them, but I've suddenly realised that I didn't read any last year. The last one I read was How the Light Gets In, in 2019. I tend to read them from the library so I'll have to reserve the next one. Suspect I'll wait now until lockdown ends which won't be for weeks, if not months I suspect. Perhaps I'll check Kindle prices...Cathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06371069000185280668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013114232214923198.post-39720516619257787072021-01-11T17:36:09.236-05:002021-01-11T17:36:09.236-05:00I am trying hard not to add new books or series to...I am trying hard not to add new books or series to my stacks, but you have convinced me to give Harry Bingham's series a try sometime.

My husband read The Splendid and the Vile and I might read his copy this year.

I love that cover for On the Wasteland.

I will be doing reviews of The Beautiful Mystery and How the Light Gets In soon. I have a hard time reviewing Louise Penny's books.
TracyKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08303342674824383688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013114232214923198.post-21182078993711531612021-01-11T16:15:20.818-05:002021-01-11T16:15:20.818-05:00Looks like you read a lot of really good books in ...Looks like you read a lot of really good books in 2020. That Fiona Griffiths series sounds like a good one. It's my favorite blog-trawling time, catching up with what other bloggers have loved.

So many gems to find in here, esp. On the Wasteland and Wolf Princess. Never heard of them before, and eager to get my hands on these. I've also watched a Harvard versus Yale match (which Yale won and then promptly celebrated with indecent exposure), so The Game sounds very interesting. And whole-heartedly agree with your choices on Act Like it, Pretty Face and the cover for Black Narcissus.

Wishing you many more wonderful reads in 2021!

~Lex (lexlingua.co) Lex @ Lexlinguahttp://lexlingua.conoreply@blogger.com
