Why is everyone getting jilted at the altar?
Sometimes I put books on reserve at my two different library systems to see which will produce the book I want first, so when I saw a book with “Best Man” in the title had arrived for me at both libraries I thought erroneously it must be the same book. It’s a funny coincidence they arrived the same day with identical jilted tropes! It is odd how certain themes become popular at the same time! There are multiple books with either the same title as these books or practically the same; I just happened to read these two.
The Best Man Plan by Jaci Burton (2020)
Two days before her wedding, Erin Bellini is jilted by email. Holding her head high, she insists on carrying on with the wedding reception at the family vineyard and decides she’ll console herself with the best man, her oldest and very attractive friend Jason, who was supposed to be the best man. Jason is too ethical to take advantage of Erin when she’s had too much to drink, plus he doesn’t want to be a revenge fling, he wants her to care about him, not her inconsiderate ex Owen. On paper, this book sounded as if it would be a lot of fun but it was very ordinary and repetitive. Also, Erin seemed very immature: she recovered too quickly from being rejected right before her wedding day, she impulsively adopted a puppy and then ignored it. I also felt the explanation for Owen’s decision not to go through with the wedding didn’t make much sense, and Jason was so appealing that no one would ever have preferred Owen in the first place!Monday, February 24, 2020
The Bromance Book Club, in which some macho athletes use romance novels to improve their real-life relationships
Title: The Bromance Book Club
Author: Lyssa Kay Adams
Publication: Berkley, Trade Paperback, 2019
Genre: Romance
Plot: Pro baseball player Gavin Scott has a beautiful wife, Thea, and three-year-old twins, and what he thinks is a perfect life until he learns his wife has been faking orgasms since their marriage. Hurt and ashamed, he moves out and Thea asks for a divorce. Drinking himself to oblivion in a motel, Gavin is visited by his best friend Del and several other athletes and Nashville notables who urge him to join their secret group, which uses romance novels to improve their ability to understand and please the women in their lives. Gavin is skeptical but has no better options, reluctantly accepting a pile of romance novels, including Courting the Countess, a regency historical that has some parallels with his situation. Under the tutelage of this ramshackle group, he persuades Thea to let him move back in for one month, with the goal of winning her back. During this time, he will try to show he understands her needs, convince her of his love, and cope with those who don’t want Gavin and Thea to have a HEA . . .
My Impressions: I don’t remember who recommended this book to me but I usually enjoy contemporary romance with a sports theme and found this entertaining and often amusing, if not quite as charming as I had hoped. While the source of Gavin and Thea’s problem is meant to be funny, their real issue is that they married quickly when Thea was pregnant, and the lifestyle/absences of a professional athlete put a strain on their marriage while they were still developing their relationship. Now they have to decide if they want to work through their problems or just bail.
Thea and her sister Liv both have a lot of baggage from their parents’ unhappy marriage and divorce. Their father is about to remarry someone close to them in age and their mother’s bitterness has rebounded on her daughters. Gavin also (although this is less convincing, given that he is a handsome, talented athlete) has struggled to believe he could find a loving relationship. The premise of the story is that until they can share their feelings and their troubled pasts, there cannot be a true meeting of the minds. Thea also has a lot of resentment that Gavin’s job takes him away from home a lot and she dropped out of college after their marriage (not sure why as they can certainly afford a babysitter if she wanted to continue her studies either full or part-time). Although Gavin’s attempts to woo her are sometimes poignant and sometimes funny – as when he takes her on a date to a craft warehouse to show he understands her interests, and his buddies stalk them in disguise), it takes Thea going to her father’s wedding to understand some truths about her own marriage, not to mention a grand gesture from Gavin to work everything out. I definitely enjoyed this enough to read the second book about Thea’s sister!
Off the Blog: It was a busy basketball weekend with two “eyelash wins” by the Crimson over Princeton (61-60)and Penn (69-65), and a disappointing double OT loss by the University of Chicago to Brandeis (cheering for a family friend). I managed to squeeze in a few hours at our VITA tax site as well.

Pretty Face by Lucy Parker
Title: Pretty Face (London Celebrities series)
Author: Lucy Parker
Author: Lucy Parker
Publication: Carina Press, 2017, paperback
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Plot: Lily Lamprey is a pretty blonde starring in a very popular English television show when director Luc Savage starts casting his new 16th century historical drama. He makes fun of her as a “breathy Marilyn Monroe impersonator” but is persuaded to audition her for the part of Elizabeth I in a period drama. They clash immediately but she gets the job. Once hired, Lily needs to work hard to acquire the skills Luc requires and show the cast and critics that she was hired because she is more than a pretty face, not due to connections or because she’s having an affair with her sexy director. Even if the temptation is irresistible!
You could get away with dating a co-star - if they were single and born in the same decade. That was good promo for the show. The bosses loved it. Until the inevitable breakup, when fans went into meltdown on social media and the backlash hit. Lily had seen it happen enough at CTV that she'd never wanted to go anywhere near another actor romantically.
Nobody was high-fived for having a fling with management . . . it was all her lifelong deal-breakers in one man.
Audience: Fans of character-driven contemporary romance
My Impressions: This is the second book in an entertaining and fast-paced new series set in the celebrity world and on the London stage, always a fascinating venue. Lily is not interested in a relationship while she tries to establish a serious career; she has a complicated family history: her father is a business magnate who had an out of wedlock relationship with her mother, and his mortified wife has always despised her. Luc is just coming out of a long relationship with an actress who precipitously married someone else and just wants to focus on his new production.
Naturally, they can’t think about anyone but each other and the tension practically sizzles on the page – I love how the author manages to make their story sexy and funny at the same time. Lily’s internal monologues are especially amusing because they ring true. The minor characters are also well depicted. I like Lily's roommate Trix and Luc's ex Margo is more complicated than predictable other woman cliches. If there is a flaw, it is that humans probably can't sustain this degree of intensity nonstop (and I think Parker could have reduced the cursing). And it is hard to believe that two mature adults - who acknowledge a romantic relationship would be unprofessional and potentially disastrous to at least one of their careers and who are committed to those careers -can’t withstand temptation for a few weeks, but the result is good storytelling.

Source: Library – but I ordered the next two books in the series to keep. I suggest you begin with the first in the series, Act Like It, because characters from that book appear in this one. Thanks to Stephanie Burgis for the recommendation.
