Spell the Month in Books is hosted by Reviews from the Stacks and usually occurs on a Saturday. This edition is brought to you from Trinity College in Dublin where I am spending the night before returning to Boston tomorrow, so forgive the weak formatting.
J - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark (1961). A charismatic teacher at a girl’s school in 1930s Edinburgh has made it her mission to introduce them to arts and culture, as well as topics that would horrify their parents. Eventually, the girls turn against her. My book group read this in January and we found it very disturbing.
U - Caller Unknown by Gillian McAllister (2026). Simone thinks she is flying to Texas for a vacation with her daughter, an aspiring actress. But when she wakes up on what should be their first morning together, Lucy has been abducted and Simone has to do whatever the kidnappers say to save her daughter’s life. This is the third book I’ve read by this author and although the plots are a bit farfetched, they are suspenseful, fast-paced reads.
L - Love Felt Like This by Julie Olivia (2026). Beverly is a puppeteer trying to save her Muppets-like show from corporate cuts. Griffin Harvey is a rock star with a two-year-old child and writer’s block. Maybe he can start writing songs again *and* help Beverly in the process. But could a relationship between two such different people really work? This was different enough to be intriguing.
Y - You Started It by Jackie Khalilieh (2025). This was a YA that started out as several have recently, with the heroine getting dumped just as she has big plans for her relationship and senior year. To make the ex jealous, Jamie starts fake-dating starts dating an outgoing and much more fun boy a year younger. I wasn’t a big fan of Jamie who is rude and sometimes mean (although she matures) but the characters were interesting and their shared Arab heritage and Canadian setting were appealing. H
