The Boston Public Library (which is my library) just announced its end of year statistics and most checked out books (across all platforms) of 2025, which is interesting. The library lent 7.5 million physical and digital items in 2025, up from 6.6 million in 2024.
- “Onyx Storm,” Rebecca Yarros
- “A Court of Thorns and Roses,” Sarah J. Maas
- “Happy Place,” Emily Henry
- “Demon Copperhead,” Barbara Kingsolver
- “The Wedding People,” Alison Espach
- “Sunrise on the Reaping,” Suzanne Collins
- “The Women,” Kristin Hannah
- “Shield of Sparrows,” Devney Perry
- “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” Suzanne Collins
- "Great Big Beautiful Life," Emily Henry
- I've read half of these but was unimpressed by the Emily Henry books (although did read them both!), found Demon Copperhead unbearably depressing (still, it provide a good book group discussion), and liked The Women (but found the part set in Vietnam more interesting than everything that happened to Frankie when she returned home - and oh my, the reliance on coincidence). I think The Wedding People was my favorite of this group. I haven't read any fantasy lately but I think my sisters have been reading Rebecca Yarros' books and maybe Sarah Maas. Suzanne Collins wrote The Hunger Games: I enjoyed the first book, which seemed very creative but was disappointed by later books in the series. I hadn't heard of Shield of Sparrows but it sounds good (at 528 pages, it should be). Oddly, there are no statistics for nonfiction circulation. The BPL is always slow to acquire new books (about two-three months behind Minuteman, the suburban library consortium) but does purchase everything sooner or later.
- Are any of these on your Best of 2025 list? I haven't done mine yet but stay tuned.
